Fijian forward Saimoni Vunilagi dies in Fukuoka after suspected heatstroke

Saimoni Vunilagi, a 26-year-old Fijian back rower for Kyuden Voltex, died in Fukuoka, Japan, on Friday, 7 August 2026 after a training session, the club announced. He had signed for Kyuden Voltex in July.

A team statement said: "After team practice on Monday, 3 August 2026, Saimoni displayed symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke. He was transported to a medical facility for treatment, but despite the best efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away." Temperatures in the southern city of Fukuoka this week have reached 35C degrees.

The club added: "The players, staff, and all team associates are devastated by this sudden news. "Although Saimoni had only recently joined Kyushu KV, his generous spirit and powerful style of play had raised high hopes for his contributions in the upcoming season. "We humbly pray for the repose of his soul and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family."

Vunilagi was a back rower who joined Kyuden Voltex last month and had previously played in the top flight for Japan Rugby League One side Tokyo Sungoliath. He stood 6ft 5in (1.96m) and weighed 18st 6lb (117kg). He attended university in Japan and began his professional career in 2023.

Kyuden Voltex are a Japanese second division team based in Fukuoka. "We express our heartfelt condolences upon receiving the news of the passing of Saimoni. We offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and all those involved," a statement from Japan Rugby League One read.

"At this time of profound grief, we respectfully ask the family be granted space and privacy," the club said.
