Five clubs linked to Jean-Philippe Mateta as contract dispute with Crystal Palace continues
Jean-Philippe Mateta is suing Crystal Palace over the final year of his contract and, despite failing so far to have the extension declared invalid by an independent Premier League panel and by FIFA, he played for Palace in their defeat to Everton on Saturday.
Mateta signed a four-and-a-half-year contract after joining permanently from Mainz in January 2022 following an initial loan, with a 12-month extension option that Palace activated in 2024, leaving his deal due to expire at the end of the campaign. He and his representatives challenged the validity of that extension, lodging a petition with an independent tribunal under Premier League regulations last season; an official outcome has not been announced and Palace maintain the contract remains valid.
Atletico Madrid has been named as one possible destination should a formal agreement be reached before the summer transfer deadline, with the move depending on the resolution of Mateta’s ongoing dispute and the timing of any transfer.
Mateta’s advisers have been working to find him a new club and have reportedly approached Tottenham Hotspur about a potential transfer; Tottenham are said to be on the verge of signing Savinho and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City but remain interested in adding another attacker.
Crystal Palace might expect a substantial fee for Mateta if Manchester United were to pursue him, although reported interest from the Red Devils has been described as subdued; Mateta is viewed in reports as a rotation-friendly forward who could supplement United’s attacking options and, from a footballing perspective, the club offers the possibility of competing in the Champions League while playing in the Premier League.
Nottingham Forest are listed among the suitors, with the club previously linked to Mateta by submitting a past bid of £35 million and being viewed as a destination that could offer regular Premier League minutes.
Aston Villa are reported to be the most serious domestic candidate, with the club reportedly willing to acquire Mateta outright; coverage notes he meets several requirements for Villa, including Premier League experience and European football exposure, while price and time remain potential obstacles and the club could prioritise him again in January if a summer deal does not materialise.
