Five former cricketers were interviewed in Mumbai on October 15, 2026, for the vacant senior men’s selection committee position at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The vacancy arose after Ajit Agarkar opted not to seek a renewal of his contract, which expired on October 4.

The Cricket Advisory Committee, made up of Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, conducted the interviews, The Hindu reported. The candidates were the Mumbai trio of Wasim Jaffer, Ramesh Powar and Salil Ankola, along with Baroda’s Jacob Martin and Connor Williams.

Salil Ankola brings prior selection committee experience, having been part of Agarkar’s panel that picked India’s triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup squad; he is seeking a return to the five-member panel after a two-year hiatus.

Wasim Jaffer is the leading run-scorer in Ranji Trophy history and has 31 Test caps for India; under BCCI rules the panel member with the most Test appearances serves as chairman, meaning Jaffer would automatically assume that role if chosen.

Ramesh Powar, the former Mumbai off-spinner, is understood to be the front-runner for the vacancy; he has coached Gujarat in domestic cricket for the last three seasons and was initially approached to apply for a junior selection committee position before being steered toward the senior role.

Baroda’s Jacob Martin and Connor Williams completed the interview list; Connor Williams’s purported Test appearance in South Africa was later deemed to be an abandoned match, and the other four candidates have represented India in Tests.

The interviews by the Cricket Advisory Committee on October 15 form part of the BCCI’s process to fill the seat left vacant by Ajit Agarkar, with the board continuing its selection procedure to appoint a new member to the senior men’s selection committee.
