Ciaran Frawley is expected to press Sam Prendergast for the starting fly-half position for Ireland ahead of November's Nations Championship fixtures, the BBC reported on 21 October 2026. The contest for the number 10 shirt has intensified after a summer of rotation and injuries to other contenders.

Since Johnny Sexton's retirement in 2023 the role has been unsettled: Prendergast looked to be establishing himself earlier this year before a shaky Six Nations opened the door for Jack Crowley, who impressed for the remainder of that tournament. Crowley suffered a back injury at the end of last season and Prendergast returned to 10 for the summer Nations Championship matches against Australia and New Zealand, while Frawley started and produced a solid performance against Japan in July.

Former Ireland scrum-half Conor Murray identified Frawley as a player to watch, saying Prendergast played "really well" as he was named player of the match in Leinster's Investec Champions Cup win over Clermont on Saturday. Murray added: "It is one to watch in terms of seeing how much say he'll have [in November]." He also said: "I suspect that Sam is going in as number one choice, but Frawley is one to keep an eye on."

Frawley's elevation follows a summer move from Leinster to Connacht where he has become first choice under Stuart Lancaster after being used mainly at full-back or centre in Dublin. He scored twice on his Connacht debut against Benetton in the United Rugby Championship and added two more tries in Saturday's Champions Cup win over Saracens in Galway.

Murray raised Ireland's goal-kicking as "the elephant in the room" and noted Frawley has not been kicking from the tee for Connacht. At international level Frawley landed three of his four attempts for Ireland in the victory over Japan in July, and his last-gasp drop goal in South Africa in 2024 secured a second-ever Test win there and a series draw with the world champions.

Andy Farrell named a largely settled squad for the November internationals despite a number of injuries to significant players such as captain Caelan Doris, with the only new call-ups being Ulster forwards Jamie Benson and James McNabney — players Farrell described as a "specimen". Murray said the squad was "as expected" and suggested the new Nations Championship could be used in preparation for the World Cup: "You're obviously aware there's a World Cup and you want to be on that squad," he said. "They might use it as a building block and form it as a mini-tournament leading up to the World Cup, or try to replicate scenarios with the way the games are going to go, to lead up to a final."

Ireland's November programme begins with Argentina at the Aviva Stadium on 7 November, followed by matches against Fiji and South Africa and the inaugural finals weekend in London, providing the immediate context in which the fly-half pecking order will be tested.
