Game Science will forgo AI to accelerate Black Myth: Zhong Kui development, co-founder says

Game Science co-founder Yang Qi told followers on Weibo that the studio will not rely on artificial intelligence to speed development of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a report by Gamersky cited by Khel Now on August 10, 2026 said. His comments set out the studio’s intention to adhere to traditional design and production methods for the sequel.
Game Science’s debut AAA title, Black Myth: Wukong, was described in the report as a huge success, and fans are awaiting the follow-up, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, which still does not have a release date. The company has said the title remains in an early phase of development. Publicly available material for the game so far is limited to promotional films and a cinematic trailer.
Yang’s Weibo exchange began after he praised Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey, calling it "standard answer for epic films." During that interaction a fan asked whether AI could be used to accelerate Zhong Kui’s development, and Gamersky relayed Yang’s response to the question.
A Gamersky post quoted the studio’s stance with the line: "No need to use AI to speed things up and sticking with Traditional Techniques." Yang also explained that the whole team intends to stick with traditional design and development methods rather than relying on AI for core creative work.
According to Yang, the design and asset-creation stages for Black Myth: Zhong Kui will largely avoid AI-generated content. He said the studio does not oppose AI in principle but wants to preserve the human craftsmanship that contributes to the game’s visual identity, adding that he believes handcrafted design delivers stronger artistic quality and does not see a need to rush toward AI simply because the technology is available.
Game Science officially revealed Black Myth: Zhong Kui at last year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live, releasing a cinematic trailer that introduced the new protagonist Zhong Kui and a short promotional film. The studio is also known for using August 20 as an annual date to showcase and share its major announcements.
The studio’s confirmation that Zhong Kui remains in early development, together with its stated preference for traditional production techniques and the use of August 20 as an annual announcement date, establishes that further official updates are most likely to appear through the company’s established channels and scheduled showcases.
