Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru takes bronze in men's individual compound at Asian Games
Indian compound archer Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru claimed the men's individual compound bronze medal at the Asian Games in Japan on Thursday, October 1, 2026, defeating Vietnam's Cong Duc Dang 149-144 in the bronze medal playoff at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square.
The 20-year-old, who was part of India's gold-winning men's team on Wednesday, reached the individual semifinals but lost his chance at gold before returning to win the third-place match. The archery competition was held at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square during the Games.
In the bronze medal playoff, Ganesh produced near-perfect shooting, finishing 149-144 over Cong Duc Dang and landing on the mark with 14 of his 15 arrows. The margin and his accuracy decided the contest for third place.
Ganesh had been eliminated from gold-medal contention after a 144-148 semifinal defeat to South Korea's Kim Jongho. He trailed throughout the semifinal, with the five-series scores reading 29-30, 29-30, 29-28, 29-30 and 28-30.
Earlier on the same day Ganesh beat Chinese Taipei's Chieh-Lun Chen 148-138 in the quarterfinals at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square. In that match he won all five series 29-28, 29-28, 30-29, 30-26 and 30-27, recording only two 9s in the opening two series before switching to a run of 10s.
Fellow Indian compound archer Chikitha Taniparthi missed out on a third medal when she was eliminated in the women's individual quarterfinals, losing 143-144 to Indonesia's Nurisa Dian Ashrifah. Chikitha had won gold in both the women's team and mixed team compound events on Wednesday.
Ganesh's victory in the bronze medal playoff secures third place for him in the men's individual compound event at the Asian Games.
