Gary Kirsten said he and India coach Gautam Gambhir discussed coaching rather than reminiscing after India’s 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle on Day 5. Kirsten, who now leads Sri Lanka, described the post-match exchange as a conversation about the practice and pressures of international coaching.

Kirsten famously coached Gambhir during India’s 2011 World Cup-winning campaign, and the pair met again while working for opposing teams in Galle. Kirsten is the Sri Lanka head coach on a two-year contract he took up earlier this year, and Gambhir assumed the India head coach role in July 2024. Their reunion drew attention because of that shared history and their current positions on rival benches.

On the field, India’s batting and bowling produced the match-defining contributions that underpinned the victory. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar produced a 10-wicket match haul, while Devdutt Padikkal scored 167 in the first innings to lay the foundation for India’s control of the Test.

Kirsten outlined the content of his discussion with Gambhir at the post-match media session, saying: "We didn't do much reminiscing; we actually spoke about coaching and the challenges of coaching, and we both have strong values around Test cricket. So we had a good conversation around that, obviously trying to help our players play the best cricket they can in both countries. We have very similar ideas about how we want our teams to play Test cricket." He emphasised the exchange was focused on the high-pressure environment of international coaching and their shared blueprint for the longest format.

Their meeting was framed in the context of a long-standing professional relationship and mutual regard. The conversation highlighted that both coaches hold deeply rooted principles regarding red-ball cricket and want their teams to play a competitive, positive brand of Test cricket.

Even before the series began, Kirsten publicly defended his former pupil when Gambhir faced intense media scrutiny after a string of difficult Test results for India. Kirsten said: "He has won a T20 World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy. He's also had success in the IPL—his record speaks for itself. I really enjoyed working with him when he was a player. He's a smart cricketer, and I knew he'd have success as a coach."

India’s win on Day 5 gave them a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series and earned the side 12 World Test Championship points.
