Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly beat Japan's 7th seeds Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi 21-16, 21-12 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium on Thursday, August 20 to advance to the quarter-finals of the BWF World Championships.

Ranked 39th in the world, the Indian pairing arrived at the event in strong touch after returning from a three-month absence caused by an injury to Treesa Jolly; they had won the Phillipines international in August as part of a measured comeback at a lower-tier event. Tournament reports described their form throughout the championships as exceptional, with no fitness concerns noted for the duo.

On court, Treesa's jump-smashing stood out as the decisive element, with her aggression from both backcourt and front putting Japan under sustained pressure. Gayatri was described as slightly passive in the contest, but Treesa's dominance from multiple positions forced errors and opened attacking opportunities.

The match featured contentious moments involving the chair umpire; the Indians' protests about the Japanese pair's conduct were not upheld and Treesa was shown a yellow card warning for abusing the shuttle. Following that warning, Treesa continued to dispute decisions with the match referee and was told by Pullela Gopichand from outside the court to return to her coach.

After the interventions, Treesa reacted audibly after several winning smashes, a response the report said unsettled the Japanese pair, while the Indira Gandhi Stadium crowd vocally supported the Indian duo. Observers also praised the pair's rotations, in particular Treesa's forecourt work, and noted their use of deft drops and pushes to unnerve a Chinese pair in recent play, recalling the pair's spell in the world top 10 last year.

Their victory into the last eight leaves Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly one win away from a medal at the BWF World Championships.
