Shubman Gill smashed an unbeaten 223 in the second One-Day International against the West Indies in Guwahati on Wednesday, guiding India to a successful chase of 406. The 223 not out came off 133 balls and was Gill’s second ODI double century, underpinning India’s highest successful chase.

Technique and aesthetics were central to the coverage of the innings, but the story also emphasised responsibility: with the series up for grabs, Gill assumed the role of the set batter who must carry an innings. The piece contrasted the visual beauty of his strokeplay with the practical demands of a big chase, and recalled his response last year in England when, after India lost the first Test at Leeds despite his first-innings 147, he batted 549 balls for 430 across the match.

Gill combined compactness and expansion through a wide array of shots. His wrists produced late cuts, flicks behind square and punches through cover; he drove full-faced and straight; and when Alzarri Joseph bowled a short ball at serious pace, Gill replied with a compact short-arm jab.

He repeatedly used his feet, stepping out to Roston Chase and Keemo Paul to get to the pitch of the ball and dispatch deliveries over square-leg and cow corner. Gill operated without a single grand plan, instead working through modest checkpoints: 75-80 in the PowerPlay, no wickets; 200-210 by 25 overs; survive the new ball; exploit the older ball; remember the short side.

India reached 92 without loss in the first 10 overs and surpassed Gill’s next checkpoint as the chase progressed. Gill had already spent 50 overs in the field before he began his innings and then batted through all 43.3 overs of the chase, combining skill with discipline, appetite and fitness.

The raw figures underlined the scale of the performance: an unbeaten 223 from 133 balls, Gill’s second ODI double century and the score that delivered India’s highest successful chase. The innings was described as appearing effortless while demanding everything.

The unbeaten 223 arrived with the series up for grabs, and it secured the successful pursuit of 406 in the second ODI.
