Glave wins European 100m as Azu takes silver for Great Britain in Birmingham
Romell Glave and Jeremiah Azu finished first and second for Great Britain in the men's 100 metres final at the European Championships in Birmingham on 11 August 2026, Glave clocking 10.09 seconds and Azu 10.16. The one-two came at Alexander Stadium as the hosts followed Monday's women's 100m victory by Amy Hunt with further sprint success.
Glave, 26, had previously made an international podium with 100m bronze at these championships in Rome two years ago and upgraded to gold in Birmingham. Azu, 25, who was world and European indoor 60m champion in 2025, improved on the bronze he won in 2022. Three British men had qualified for the final, though Louie Hinchliffe did not contest the medal race.
Glave hit the front around the 30-metre mark, extended his lead and celebrated by raising a finger to the sky and running on beyond the finish line. He had also produced a dominant semi-final earlier in the evening. Germany's Owen Ansah completed the podium after Italy's two-time defending champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs pulled up with an injury at halfway.
Glave said: "Upgrading from a bronze medal from 2024 is an amazing feeling," and added: "The aim was to get [British] one, two, and three, but we got one-two, which is also amazing." He also commented on the team's form, saying: "It is domination. Total domination."
Glave's season has included a first legal sub-10-second run to win his first British title in June and six sub-10 performances in all conditions this year, including a victory over Jacobs on Italian soil. A talented junior, he was the fastest 17-year-old in the world in 2017 after recording 10.21, but his progress has been interrupted by injuries, including a fracture in his back. This season he said he focused on sharpening the first 40 metres of his race.
Azu ran a season's best of 10.00 at the Commonwealth Games two weeks ago but finished fifth in that final. After a golden 2025 season, he placed fourth and fifth respectively at this year's World Indoor Championships and Commonwealth Games. Reflecting on his campaign, he said: "The most irregular [season] in terms of races, quite inconsistent. When it comes to championships, I know I find my best. We always say times are irrelevant at this point. You want to go out there and race for medals." He added: "I want to put in my best performance in the final and I felt like I did that today. You always want to be on the podium. In the 100m there are over 100 guys that are competitive, so it is always tough."
Glave's victory made him the sixth man to win the European 100m title and the third British winner in the past six editions after Zharnel Hughes (2018) and James Dasaolu (2014). The one-two for Great Britain continued the hosts' sprint success at these championships.
