Great Britain eliminated by Czechia in Billie Jean King Cup quarter-finals in Shenzhen

Great Britain were eliminated by Czechia in the Billie Jean King Cup quarter-finals in Shenzhen on 22 September 2026 after Sonay Kartal and Katie Boulter were defeated, ending Britain's campaign after one match at the Finals.

Anne Keothavong’s side had been attempting to reach the last four for the fourth time in five years but entered the tie as clear underdogs; the Czech squad, led by Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, is ranked entirely above Great Britain’s players. The loss means Britain will not lift the trophy this year and the Czechs advance to the semi-finals.

Marie Bouzkova defeated Kartal 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4 in a contest that lasted just under three hours. Kartal was playing her first match in six months after sustaining a stress fracture in her back at Indian Wells in March, and she saved three match points and broke Bouzkova’s serve late but was unable to force parity.

Kartal initially played well against the 26th-ranked Bouzkova, failing to convert a 40-0 lead in the third game that would have put her 3-0 ahead, and she was narrowly beaten in the first-set tie-break. She recovered to take the second set and often dictated rallies, but fatigue appeared to affect the 24-year-old as Bouzkova ran off four consecutive games in the deciding set.

Katie Boulter then faced Noskova and lost 6-2, 7-6 (3), with Noskova serving strongly in the tie-break. Boulter dropped the opening four games as she struggled with her serve before the match settled into a closer contest; Noskova’s win secured the tie for Czechia.

Noskova is the world No 6 and claimed her first grand slam title at SW19 in July; her victory sends Czechia into the semi-finals for the first time since 2023 and keeps their bid alive for a seventh title in the competition since 2011. Keothavong’s team, which reached the Finals after upsetting Australia in April with an understrength side, had seen neither Kartal nor Boulter available for that earlier tie, with Kartal then at the start of an injury break that caused her to miss the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Great Britain will next contest the Davis Cup quarter-finals in November against Alexander Zverev’s Germany after booking a return to the eight-team Davis Cup Finals with a 4-0 win over Ecuador at London’s Copper Box. The Davis Cup Finals are scheduled at the SuperTennis Arena from 24 to 29 November, with Britain set to face either Spain or Austria should they overcome Germany.
