Greece beat Germany 1-0 in Klopp’s Augsburg home debut
Greece defeated Germany 1-0 in Augsburg on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, in a UEFA Nations League Group A2 match when Dimitris Kourbelis scored in the 74th minute. The result spoiled Juergen Klopp’s home debut on the German bench.
It was Greece’s first victory in 11 meetings with Germany and moved them to the top of Group A2 on six points from two matches, while Germany have one point. Klopp, who took over in July after Germany’s early World Cup exit, has now failed to win either of his two matches in charge following a 1-1 draw against the Dutch in Amsterdam on Thursday. "I could have lived with us not winning but you cannot lose such a game," Klopp said. "We have been together for a week now, all mixed together, and that needs time. "The result is not cool but it is absolutely part of the process," he said.
Germany dominated possession early, registering close to 80% in the first half, but defensive lapses, particularly after the interval, left space for Greek attacks that ultimately proved decisive.
The hosts began to create chances after raising their tempo and pressing higher; Felix Nmecha fired wide in the 54th, a minute after Greece keeper Konstantinos Tzolakis had palmed a Joshua Kimmich free kick over the bar. Greece nearly took the lead in the 66th when substitute Fotis Ioannidis shot just wide after Kimmich lost possession, then Kourbelis’ deflected low drive in the 74th produced the match-winning goal.
The victory was Greece’s second in succession, following their last‑gasp 2-1 win over Serbia on Thursday.
In the same group, Netherlands beat Serbia 2-1 as Mexx Meerdink scored twice on his second appearance for the national team, securing the Dutch their first win under new coach Xavi Hernandez after Thursday’s draw with Germany. "It’s a boyhood dream. I actually don’t have any words for it," Meerdink said. "Everything is happening so quickly. You just don’t realise what can happen in the space of a week. It’s also great that we managed to win here. "Sometimes you need a bit of luck. This time it went my way. Then you have to be there and be important for the team. I did feel a little pressure, I was a bit nervous. But you play that out of your system. And then to be allowed to score two is fantastic."
Defending champions Portugal edged Norway 2-1 with Joao Felix scoring for the second consecutive Nations League match and Goncalo Ramos’ chip settling the game after Erling Haaland had equalised; Cristiano Ronaldo remained on the bench throughout. Denmark recorded a 2-0 win over Wales when Ben Davies scored an own goal in the 53rd minute and Gustav Isaksen added a second on the hour to secure Denmark’s first points in Group A4. In Group B3, Ireland scored twice in three minutes early in the first half to beat Israel 3-0 in a politically charged encounter.
Germany will face Serbia on Thursday and then travel to play Greece three days later.
