Gujarat Titans reject Hardik Pandya return after captaincy demand

Sources have described a difficult period for Hardik Pandya since his return to Mumbai, with scrutiny over results under his captaincy and reports of a rift between players and the captain.
According to Express Sports and the Indian Express, Pandya held talks about a possible return to his former franchise, Gujarat Titans, and GT management was reportedly receptive to the idea. The reports say the franchise discussed the potential move with current captain Shubman Gill, who had no objections to trading for Pandya at that stage.
The discussions reportedly collapsed when Pandya made captaincy a condition of any return. “The franchise was fine with him making a return. They had even discussed the same with its captain Shubman Gill, and he, too, had agreed that the franchise could trade him back. But when his condition of captaincy was put up, everyone said no to it,” said a source.
Pandya’s representative subsequently pushed back on reports that the player had held direct talks with other teams. “Hardik Pandya had no direct conversation with any franchise whatsoever regarding transfer trade or otherwise. If any approach has been made to him, that has been directed to the MI franchise” the spokesperson clarified.
Mumbai Indians’ 2026 season results are cited as a catalyst for possible roster changes: the franchise won only 4 out of their 14 league matches and finished ninth in the point table. Media reports have linked Pandya with moves to Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders as discussions over squad composition continue ahead of IPL 2027.
