Gukesh to defend World Chess Championship title against Javokhir Sindarov in Geneva on November 24

D Gukesh will begin his World Chess Championship 2026 title defence against Javokhir Sindarov in Geneva on November 24, with the match schedule confirmed. The contest will feature 14 classical games.
Gukesh claimed the crown in December 2024, defeating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore; at just 18, he became the youngest world champion in chess history, sealing the title with a victory in the 14th and final classical game. Sindarov’s appearance as challenger follows a rapid rise through the events that determine the world championship cycle.
The match is scheduled over 14 classical games, with the first player to reach 7.5 points declared World Champion and the contest ending immediately; if neither player reaches 7.5 after the scheduled games, the title will be decided in tiebreaks.
The 20-year-old Uzbek won the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus, finishing unbeaten with 10 points from 14 games and securing first place with a round to spare. That triumph followed his victory at the 2025 FIDE World Cup.
Playing on home soil, Sindarov helped Uzbekistan win the Open section at the Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, reclaiming the title the country first secured in Chennai in 2022. Uzbekistan finished ahead of defending champions India and Germany in a tense final stretch, with Sindarov going through the tournament unbeaten.
India and Uzbekistan met in Round 6 of the Olympiad, but the team board orders meant Gukesh and Sindarov did not face each other, leaving a potential classical encounter to await Geneva. Gukesh’s own campaign in Samarkand saw him play on board four for India and produce a strong individual score, but he ended the event with a defeat in his final classical game before attention turned to his title defence.
The schedule is now confirmed and both players enter the match with recent high-profile results behind them. Gukesh will attempt to protect the title that made him a global chess sensation, while Sindarov will look to cap an extraordinary run by becoming world champion; their first move in that contest comes on November 24.
