Gulveer Singh wins 5000m bronze at Asian Games in Nagoya

Gulveer Singh won the bronze medal in the men’s 5000m at the Asian Games 2026 at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, clocking 13:32.75 to finish third.

The 28-year-old’s podium finish completed a medal treble for India at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, adding to the two medals he had already taken in the men’s 1500m and 10,000m events at the same edition of the Asian Games.

Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew claimed the 5000m gold in 13:30.79, while Japan’s Tomonori Yamaguchi took silver in 13:31.43, with Gulveer occupying the third step of the podium.

India’s Avinash Sable did not start in the final.

Earlier at these Games Gulveer recorded a silver in the men’s 1500m with a time of 3:36.72 and followed that by taking silver in the men’s 10,000m in 28:29.38.

Outside the Asian Games this year, Gulveer won two medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 — a silver in the men’s 10,000m and a bronze in the men’s 5000m — and he secured two gold medals at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships.

This bronze in Nagoya was Gulveer Singh’s fourth Asian Games medal overall, after his bronze in the men’s 10,000m at the Hangzhou 2022 Games, and it leaves him at the Aichi-Nagoya Games with two silver medals and one bronze across three distance events.
