Gulveer takes 1500m silver in Nagoya as Ramraj wins 400m hurdles bronze at Asian Games
Gulveer Singh won silver in the men's 1500m final at the Asian Games in Nagoya on Monday (September 28, 2026), posting a personal best of 3:36.72, and Vithya Ramraj claimed bronze in the women's 400m hurdles. Avinash Sable was unable to defend his steeplechase title, finishing fourth in the men's 3000m steeplechase.
Gulveer's 1500m silver added to the earlier silver he had taken in the 10,000m at the same Games. Ramraj clocked a personal best of 54.75 seconds to take bronze and in doing so bettered P.T. Usha's 55.42 national mark from the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles; Usha, who is currently heading the Indian Olympic Association, was in attendance. The 28-year-old Ramraj, from Coimbatore, had already been part of India's silver-winning 4x400m mixed relay team at the ongoing edition.
In the men's 1500m, Gulveer finished behind Japan's Kazuto Iizawa, with fellow Japanese Nagiya Mori taking bronze in 3:37.92. Yoonus Shah was the other Indian in the final, placing ninth in 3:43.88.
Ramraj finished behind UAE's Mariam Kareem, who won gold in a Games record 54.31 seconds, and Kazakhstan's Adelina Zems, who took silver with a personal best of 54.58. India's Anu Raghavan placed fifth with a personal best of 55.88 seconds. After the race Ramraj said: "Medal is in our hands, but time is not. This race will not come tomorrow or yesterday. Today is our day, so I was going for the timing, not the medal," she said after the race. "My coach said we would go 54 seconds. I did it, and I am so happy. The timing was so good, so I am very happy. "Everyone has been asking me because I had not gone under 55 seconds for three years. My coach, Nehpal Singh Rathore, told me to go fast, then maintain it through the sixth hurdle. From the sixth hurdle to the finish line, it was all out."
Avinash Sable produced a season's best of 8:21.67 but finished fourth, 4.31 seconds adrift of Japan's Ryuji Miura, who won gold in a Games record 8:17.36. Miura's compatriot Ryoma Aoki took silver with a personal best of 8:17.60, and Qatar's Zakaria Elahlaami claimed bronze in 8:18.13. The report described Sable as a 32-year-old from Maharashtra and a two-time Olympian.
In other Indian results, Santosh Kumar Tamilarasan ran 49.95 to finish seventh in the men's 400m hurdles final. Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Seema Kaliramna recorded a personal best of 59.88m on her fifth attempt but placed fourth in the women's discus throw, with all three medallists throwing more than 60m.
Ramraj's bronze was her second medal at the ongoing edition of the quadrennial event.
