Gurdial Singh Bhangu, the coach who led India’s women’s hockey team to the 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medal, has died in Surrey, Canada, the news was published on November 8, 2026. Bhangu’s name will forever be associated with one of the most memorable victories in Indian women’s hockey.

"Hockey India mourns the sad demise of the Chief Coach of the 2002 Commonwealth Games Gold Medal-winning Indian Women’s Team, Shri Gurdial Singh Bhangu, at the age of 86. His contribution to Indian hockey will always be remembered. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones," the federation wrote alongwith a post in 'X'. Under Bhangu’s guidance India beat England 3-2 in the Manchester final, a campaign that became a defining moment for the team.

The Manchester final was settled in extra time by Mamta Kharab’s goal after captain Suraj Lata Devi and her teammates had negotiated a demanding tournament. Bhangu’s tactical direction—particularly his instruction to stay alert because an attacking penalty-corner sequence could continue after the final hooter—proved decisive in the closing moments of the match.

As the hooter sounded in extra time, England’s defenders momentarily switched off and the Indian players continued their attack; Kharab converted a rebound to score the winning goal. The strike was initially disallowed but the officials later overturned the decision, confirming India’s 3-2 victory.

Bhangu was credited in the report as the man who masterminded the team’s success in Manchester, and the triumph subsequently entered popular sporting culture by inspiring the storyline of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chak De! India; the film’s fictional Kabir Khan character was inspired by former India goalkeeper Mir Ranjan Negi while Bhangu was credited with orchestrating the 2002 win.

Born in Lyallpur, now Faisalabad in Pakistan, Bhangu grew up in Ambala and played hockey at university level before undergoing coaching training at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, where he learned from Dhyan Chand and Olympic gold medallist Balkishan Singh. His coaching résumé included international experience prior to leading India.

Between 1972 and 1976 Bhangu served as chief coach of the Nigerian women’s hockey team and helped the side qualify for its first Women’s Hockey World Cup in 1976. He became India’s chief coach in 1998 after the team’s 12th-place finish at the Women’s Hockey World Cup, guided India to a silver medal at the Bangkok Asian Games later that year, and received the Dronacharya Award in 2000 as the first hockey coach to be honoured with the national coaching award.

Bhangu’s legacy will remain closely associated with India’s historic 2002 Commonwealth Games triumph, a victory that elevated women’s hockey in the country and inspired generations of players.
