Gurjapneet Singh took three wickets in his opening spell to help Tamil Nadu seize the initiative on day one of their Ranji Trophy match against Uttarakhand in Chennai, the player said on October 18, 2026.

Gurjapneet, a left-arm pacer who had recently featured for India-A, joined the Tamil Nadu squad only on the eve of the game and did not train on Saturday. He moved quickly into red-ball cricket and delivered accurate bowling from his first over after arriving with the team.

Speaking about his approach, Gurjapneet said, “I was just trying to keep it normal and using the angles according to the pitch. I was understanding the batters... how they were reacting.” He exploited conditions that allowed the ball to move both ways, repeatedly changing his point of attack from over to around the wicket.

On how he set up batters, Gurjapneet described his method as instinctive: “It is just my instincts. I watch the batter’s foot movement and how he reacts. I then try to change it a bit, and it gave positive results.”

Gurjapneet also noted the benefit of recent exposure at higher levels, having served as a net bowler with the national team. “The thing is, you will get confidence when you bowl to good batters like Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli. When you then come to the Ranji Trophy, you will get a different kind of confidence,” he added.

When asked about his progress on India-A and Emerging Tours limited-overs assignments, Gurjapneet emphasised his long-term objective for selection. “That’s the main job, and that box is still empty. I have to tick that,” he said.
