Hampton save secures Chelsea point as Bompastor returns to face OL Lyonnes

Chelsea earned a Champions League point against OL Lyonnes on 30 September 2026 as goalkeeper Hannah Hampton produced a late intervention to preserve the draw on head coach Sonia Bompastor’s return to face her former club. The contest was tight and low on clear chances, but Hampton’s saves were decisive in keeping the sides level.
Lyonnes arrived having scored eight goals in their opening group fixture away to Servette and, according to match reports, having struck at least seven times in each of their four matches this season across all competitions. Chelsea’s display was described as controlled and earned praise despite limited goalmouth action; the English side held the majority of possession and matched Lyonnes in midfield, with Lexi Potter starting the game fresh from her first senior England call-up on Tuesday and Keira Walsh helping to maintain control.
The hosts provided the first notable threats: Hampton made a sharp save from Salma Paralluelo on 20 minutes and Melchie Dumornay forced a powerful effort that flew just wide of the base of the post shortly afterwards. Veerle Buurman produced a last-ditch block to deny Marie-Antoinette Katoto from inside the area as Lyonnes generated the better first-half opportunities.
Chelsea began the second half on the front foot and believed they should have had a penalty when Tarciane took out Sjoeke Nüsken at the far post, only for a video review to rule Lucy Bronze had been interfering from an offside position as the ball was crossed; Tarciane was booked for the challenge. The match remained tight after that decision.
Bompastor introduced Lauren James for Melvine Malard with just over half an hour remaining, and Lyonnes brought on Ada Hegerberg; however, neither side looked likely to break the deadlock as the teams’ off-the-ball qualities appeared to cancel each other out. The contest continued to feature few clear openings despite the personnel changes.
Controversy struck in the 72nd minute when Paralluelo’s low strike was ruled out for offside, and shortly after Chelsea were initially awarded a penalty for an apparent foul by Damaris Egurrola on James; the decision was overturned on review, with the referee concluding James made contact with Egurrola. Match reports note Egurrola mistimed her tackle and missed the ball, a moment that left Chelsea exasperated.
Chelsea’s best late chance fell to James, whose close-range effort was blocked by Maria Grohs, before Hampton produced a superb save from Hegerberg and Maika Hamano dragged narrowly wide deep into stoppage time. The single point moves Chelsea to four points from their first two Champions League group fixtures.
