Hardik Pandya doubtful for India’s West Indies ODI series over bowling workload
Jagran News reporter Abhishek Tripathi has reported that Hardik Pandya is doubtful for India’s three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which is scheduled to start on September 27, because he is currently unable to bowl more than six overs in a match. Selectors face key decisions before finalising the squad.
The series comes as India begins preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, and Pandya remains an important white-ball option despite recurring injury setbacks. His value to the team is framed by his role as a pace-bowling all-rounder, and the reported bowling limitation is particularly relevant in ODI cricket where frontline all-rounders are generally expected to deliver a substantial number of overs.
Pandya is working his way back from a recent leg niggle sustained ahead of the Afghanistan series and is managing his workload as part of that recovery. That management of overs has contributed to the current uncertainty surrounding his availability for the home series against the West Indies.
Recent reports have suggested Pandya was expected to return to competitive white-ball cricket around September 20, though the BCCI has not officially confirmed that timeline. He has also been named in India A’s squad for the one-day games against Australia A, which are scheduled to start on 6th October, but his participation in those fixtures remains subject to fitness clearance.
According to the same report by Abhishek Tripathi, Ajit Agarkar could face difficult selection calls ahead of potentially leaving his role as chairman of the Indian men’s selection committee. Tripathi added that Agarkar’s contract extension has reportedly not yet been confirmed by the BCCI, giving added significance to the forthcoming West Indies squad selection if it is indeed the last he oversees as chairman.
The selection committee must also contend with player workload concerns alongside a scheduling clash with the Asian Games, which overlaps with the ODI leg of the India vs West Indies home series. The report noted that if India qualify for the gold medal match at the Asian Games, two Indian teams would be in action at the same time in two different parts of the world.
The India squad for the West Indies ODI series is expected to be announced on September 16, 2026, following the selection committee meeting led by Ajit Agarkar. Pandya’s involvement in the West Indies series and in the India A one-day games against Australia A will remain subject to fitness clearance.
