Hardik Pandya reportedly set to move from Mumbai Indians to Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2027; captaincy question looms

Hardik Pandya is reported to be set to move from Mumbai Indians to Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2027 season, according to reports on November 3, 2026, a potential trade that has prompted questions over Punjab’s captaincy.

Shreyas Iyer is the current captain of Punjab Kings and led the side to the IPL 2025 final, while reports indicate Pandya could leave Mumbai Indians to join Punjab; the discussions over his future are being framed around leadership as well as on-field roles.

The proposed swap, reported by Sportstar, would send Arshdeep Singh and Vishnu Vinod to Mumbai Indians in exchange for Pandya, and the two franchises have reportedly nearly agreed the terms; paperwork is expected to be completed soon and an official announcement is likely before the November 17 retention deadline.

Pandya brings prior captaincy experience: he guided Gujarat Titans to the title in their first season in 2022 and led the team to the final in 2023, and he returned to Mumbai Indians as captain ahead of IPL 2024.

The source describes Pandya’s tenure as Mumbai Indians captain as having limited success, stating the team struggled in two of his three seasons in charge, a record cited in discussions about whether he should assume leadership at Punjab.

Punjab Kings face a choice if the trade is finalised: the franchise could install Pandya as captain or retain Shreyas Iyer in the role, and the club could also opt to use Pandya solely as an experienced all-rounder while keeping Iyer as skipper.

For now Shreyas remains Punjab Kings’ captain and the franchise has not announced any change; whether Pandya would replace Iyer or play under him will be determined by the club once the trade paperwork is completed and any official announcement is made before the November 17 retention deadline.
