Hardik Pandya seeks return to Gujarat Titans but captaincy demand ends talks

Hardik Pandya sought a return to the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League in talks reported by Indian Express on August 12, 2026, but the franchise declined after he insisted on being reinstated as captain. The discussions followed a failed move involving Mumbai Indians earlier in the window.

Both Pandya and Gujarat Titans were described as open to the idea of a reunion, with the all-rounder having led the franchise to a title in their maiden season in 2022. Pandya’s proposed comeback carried a single condition: he wanted the captaincy back. That requirement became a central sticking point in negotiations.

"The franchise was fine with him making a return. They had even discussed the same with its captain Shubman Gill, and he, too, had agreed that the franchise could trade him back. But when his condition of captaincy was put up, everyone said no to it," a source told Indian Express.

Reports say the approach comes amid mounting uncertainty over Pandya’s future at Mumbai Indians after a disappointing 2026 campaign. Mumbai Indians won four of their 14 matches and finished ninth in the table, and Express had reported that the franchise’s management was not keen on retaining Pandya as captain and had been evaluating his role in the squad following that season.

Pandya’s relationship with the Mumbai fanbase and his recent career movements were also noted in coverage: supporters were put off by his exit after the 2021 season, and he returned to Mumbai Indians in 2024 to replace Rohit Sharma as captain. Several other franchises, including Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, were reported to have made enquiries with Mumbai Indians about Pandya.

Pandya’s spokesperson denied that the player had directly contacted any franchise about a transfer. "Hardik Pandya had no direct conversation with any franchise whatsoever regarding transfer, trade, or otherwise. If any approach has been made to him, that has been directed to the MI franchise," Express quoted the spokesperson as saying.

With Gujarat Titans unwilling to meet the captaincy demand and Mumbai Indians reported to be reassessing Pandya’s role after the 2026 season, the prospect of an inter-franchise move remains unresolved.
