Harmanpreet’s brace and Sanjay Pal penalty corner lift India to 3-1 World Cup opening win over Wales

India defeated Wales 3-1 in their opening Pool D match of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands on 16 August 2026, with Sanjay Pal scoring in the eighth minute and captain Harmanpreet Singh adding goals in the 11th and 43rd minutes. Sam Welsh reduced the deficit with a 56th-minute strike, but India held on to claim three points.

All three Indian goals came from penalty corners, with Harmanpreet converting two set-pieces and Sanjay Pal scoring the opener, reflecting India’s efficiency from dead-ball situations as they began their World Cup campaign. The match served as India’s Pool D opener in Amstelveen and concluded with Harmanpreet named ‘Player of the Match’.

Wales started brightly and produced a couple of early circle entries that tested India’s defence, with goalkeeper Suraj Karkera dealing with the initial danger. India’s first meaningful breakthrough arrived after a seventh-minute circle entry created by Dilpreet Singh led to a penalty corner; Sanjay’s initial drag-flick was blocked and struck a Welsh rusher’s foot, producing a retake that he dispatched past Toby Reynolds-Cotterill in the eighth minute.

Two minutes after the opener Jarmanpreet Singh picked up a loose ball inside the Welsh circle and attempted a reverse hit that sailed narrowly over the target. India earned another penalty corner in the 11th minute and Harmanpreet took the set-piece to make it 2-0; a further India penalty corner in the 13th minute saw Harmanpreet look for a deflection off a diving Dilpreet, and Shilanand Lakra was briefly forced off after sustaining a blow to the mouth, leaving India two goals up at the end of the first quarter.

India controlled much of the second quarter, earning penalty-corner opportunities through sustained possession and creating chances via Nilakanta Sharma, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Mandeep Singh and Rajinder Singh, though no additional goals were added before half-time. Wales threatened on the counter in the 19th minute when Jack Pritchard found space from a long ball, but Mohith HS rushed off his line to narrow the angle and force the attempt into the side boards.

Early in the third quarter India continued to exploit space on the flanks, with Harmanpreet finding Lakra with a long slap push and Abhishek producing another opening. India earned a penalty corner in the 43rd minute and Harmanpreet delivered again, firing a grounded flick past the Welsh goalkeeper to the left to make it 3-0.

In the final quarter Shilanand Lakra tried to lift the ball over the goalkeeper in the 53rd minute but was denied, and Mohith HS produced an outstanding save from a 54th-minute Welsh penalty corner by deflecting away a pacy drag-flick. Wales scored in the 56th minute amid a scramble in front of the Indian goal; after a video referral checked for a possible backstick offence and a penalty stroke, the review confirmed the ball had crossed the line before the offence and Sam Welsh was credited with the goal. India maintained composure thereafter, with Mandeep setting up Aditya on the run but the final touch missing, and saw out the remaining time to secure a 3-1 victory.

India captain and ‘Player of the Match’ Harmanpreet reflected on the game, saying: “I think we started very well. I am happy that one of the young players (Sanjay) scored our opening goal. “Overall, it was a pretty good game. All of us know the value of this World Cup and we have a clear mindset to win, and the belief is there. In our next game, we need to show more, create chances and score field goals as well.”

India will next face England in their second Pool D match on 17 August 2026 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen.
