Harriet Dart and Fran Jones win opening matches in US Open qualifying in New York on 25 August 2026

Britons Harriet Dart and Fran Jones won their opening matches in the US Open singles qualifying tournament in New York on 25 August 2026 as they began bids to reach the main draw.

Dart, who has played in the US Open main draw four times and has twice reached the US Open second round, and Jones, who qualified for the US Open for the first time last year, both advanced from the first round of qualifying in New York.

Dart beat Jordyn Hazelitt 6-0 6-7 (1-7) 6-1 in the opening qualifying round and will face Kristina Penickova, another American 16-year-old, in her next match.

Jones defeated Italy's Nuria Brancaccio 6-3 6-4 and is set to meet Germany's Mona Barthel in the second qualifying round.

Jodie Burrage was beaten by Spain's Guiomar Maristany 7-6 (7-1) 6-4, while Henry Searle lost 6-1 6-2 to American 16-year-old Michael Antonius.

Kei Nishikori, the 36-year-old Japanese and a former US Open finalist, recorded a 6-1 2-6 6-2 victory over Austrian Sebastian Ofner; Antonius will face Nishikori in the second qualifying round.

Former US Open semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov dismissed Italy's Lorenzo Giustino 6-0 6-3 and will play Kazakhstan's Timofey Skatov next; 2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu progressed with a 6-1 6-2 win against Dutch player Eva Vedder, and Heather Watson resumes her qualifying campaign with a second-round match against Spain's Angela Fita Boluda on Wednesday.

In the men's draw, Britons Jacob Fearnley, Toby Samuel, Billy Harris, Harry Wendelken and Jack Pinnington Jones return to action aiming to move one win away from the Flushing Meadows main draw, and players must come through three rounds of qualifying to reach the singles main draw, which gets under way on Sunday.
