Harriet Dart beat Lilli Tagger 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the Guangzhou Open final on 1 November 2026 to claim the first WTA Tour singles title of her career. The British number five was visibly emotional after the hard-fought victory.

Dart, 30, entered the tournament ranked 115th after coming through qualifying to reach her first tour-level final at the WTA 250 event. Her opponent was 18-year-old Austrian Lilli Tagger, ranked 53rd. The match represented Dart’s deepest run at this level and Tagger’s appearance capped a breakthrough week for the teenager.

The deciding set was tense: Dart twice saw leads erased by Tagger before breaking for a third time to go 4-3 and then holding serve to move within one game of the title. Dart held two championship points on Tagger’s serve in the ninth game, missing an inviting mid-court ball into the net on the second. She converted her third championship point with a service winner, fell to the court in celebration and then embraced her team.

Dart’s comeback from a set down completed a pattern of resilience across the week and season; the win over Tagger was the fourth time in seven matches she recovered from losing the first set. The opponent, Tagger, is identified in reports as the 2025 French Open junior champion. Tagger had earlier beaten seven-time major champion Venus Williams on her way to the final.

After the match Tagger told Dart: "It wasn't fun to be on the other side of the court today - you've had an amazing year," Tagger, who beat seven-time major champion Venus Williams on her way to the final, told Dart. The comment followed a contest described as hard-fought by both players and their teams.

The title rewards what the report describes as a strong second half of the season for Dart, during which she has struck the ball consistently and grown in confidence. Working with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli is cited in the coverage as a significant factor in Dart’s resurgence.

Dart has won 19 of her 24 tour-level matches on hard courts since Wimbledon, and her overall WTA Tour record this season is 23 victories from 34 matches, the highest winning percentage of her career. These statistics underpin the timing of the title in what the coverage calls the best week of her career.

Dart will rise back inside the world’s top 100 when the latest rankings are released on Monday, and that move will earn her direct entry into the main draw of the Australian Open in January.
