Harry Brook out for 91 as England reach 366 for eight at Headingley on day two of first Test

Harry Brook was dismissed for 91 as England reached 366 for eight against Pakistan on day two of the first Test at Headingley on August 20, 2026. Despite late wickets from Ali Usman, England held a lead of 195 runs at stumps.
The second day was described as soggy, with the clock having just passed 7pm and about half an hour of play remaining when Brook fell. Brook had missed a Test century at Headingley by one run against India last summer and entered this match as the No 1-ranked batter in the world. Earlier in his innings he had been given a reprieve on the second ball. Pakistan’s bowling presented that opportunity amid a disappointing outing for the visitors.
Brook reached 91 before attempting to push the left-arm spin of Ali Usman through a vacant mid-wicket, missed and was bowled. Usman added two more wickets before stumps. The departure denied Brook a home-ground century after his near-miss last summer.
Jordan Cox made 73, Joe Root scored 66 and Dan Lawrence contributed 51 in support of Brook’s innings. Those three half-centuries underpinned England’s total as the hosts rebuilt after losing momentum in the late session. The partnerships involving Cox, Root and Lawrence were central to England reaching the overnight score.
England slipped from 322 for five to 364 for eight during the late spells before finishing the day on 366 for eight. Pakistan had earlier been dismissed for 171. At stumps England led by 195 runs.
With England 366 for eight and a 195-run advantage at the close of day two, the match situation left open the possibility of a result inside three days.
