Harry Kane named Germany’s player of the year; Vincent Kompany wins coaches’ prize

Harry Kane was voted Germany’s player of the year in the Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS) poll organized by Kicker magazine, Kicker reported on Sunday (August 23, 2026), from Berlin. Vincent Kompany received the coach’s award.

Kane scored 61 goals across all competitions last season, a tally that included the German Supercup for Bayern Munich. His goals helped Bayern defend the Bundesliga title and secure the German Cup, in which he recorded a hat trick in the final. He also featured as Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to lift the new season’s German Supercup on Saturday, though he did not score in that match.

In the yearly VDS poll, Kane collected 272 votes to teammate Michael Olise’s 203 from a total of 659 voting members. Deniz Undav finished third on 61 votes, with Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich on 21 and Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann on 14. There were three invalid votes and Kicker published the full results on Sunday (August 23, 2026).

Vincent Kompany secured the coaches’ prize, receiving nearly half of the votes cast for that category. He finished ahead of Freiburg’s Julian Schuster, who had won the coaches’ award the previous year. Florian Wirtz was the recipient of the player of the year award in the preceding year.

The player of the year honour has been presented since 1960, while the coaches’ award has been given since 2002. Franz Beckenbauer holds the record in the player category with four wins. Jürgen Klopp and Felix Magath have each claimed the coaches’ award three times.
