Harwood-Bellis poised for Villa debut in Carabao Cup tie at Coventry
Taylor Harwood-Bellis is poised to make his debut for Aston Villa against Coventry in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, with manager Unai Emery saying "His time is coming" when asked about the 24-year-old defender.
The £30m signing from Southampton has yet to play since arriving at Villa Park and was omitted from the club's Champions League squad, a situation that has tested his patience just over two weeks after joining. Villa bought Harwood-Bellis to replace Ezri Konsa following Konsa's £51m move to Arsenal, leaving Emery to balance new arrivals with immediate results.
Villa's defence has come under scrutiny after a damaging weekend: they conceded 22 shots in Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Nottingham Forest and had allowed 21 shots during the opening-weekend collapse at Brighton. Forest's expected goals in that match was 1.92 and Villa won only 35.3% of their tackles.
Injuries have compounded the problem, with Pau Torres sidelined for three weeks by a hamstring issue and Ian Maatsen ruled out until November after a late ankle problem that left Villa down to 10 men when Emery had used all his substitutions before Igor Jesus' late winner. Matty Cash has also been managing a muscle problem, which kept him out of the 3-2 Champions League win at Club Brugge and Saturday's loss.
Those absences mean Villa are likely to field an untried back line at the CBS Arena on Wednesday, with left-back Matteo Ruggeri expected to make his full debut alongside Harwood-Bellis. Victor Lindelof, who has started all six of Villa's games so far including the Super Cup defeat by Paris St-Germain last month, is likely to be rested for the cup tie.
Harwood-Bellis scored in his only England appearance, against the Republic of Ireland in 2024. In 2024-25 with Southampton, who managed just 12 points and finished bottom of the Premier League, he made four errors leading to goals; he averaged 0.9 tackles per game compared to Konsa's 1.0, recorded 1.4 blocks and 4.5 clearances per 90 minutes, and averaged 67.6 passes per game versus Konsa's 50. In the following season, during Southampton's Championship play-off exit after the Spygate scandal, he averaged 7.4 clearances per game, 0.8 tackles and 0.9 interceptions.
Emery explained the decision to omit Harwood-Bellis, Brian Madjo and Modou Cisse from the European squad, saying: "Because in Europe you can have 23 players and in the league not." He added: "[Mikel] Arteta wanted to open it for more players. We needed to take off someone, and it was Taylor. "It is hard, the decision we took, and for the players. The experience we have here, when we were without Malen, Andres. To decide, it is through the analysis of how we are expecting to be until January. "We are going to play eight matches. Cisse is not in because he is injured. Madjo is still injured for the next two weeks minimum. Taylor arrived as the last one, and we can get the balance with Lamare Bogarde, and we can even play Kamara. "We tried to analyse it deeply. Taylor will be here for a long time, and hopefully, we will have the opportunity to play in Europe with us, in January maybe, and the next few years." Emery also recalled last season's situation with Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia, noting Malen eventually left for Roma last January as he sought more playing time and responsibility.
Harwood-Bellis is therefore set to be part of an inexperienced defence at the CBS Arena on Wednesday as Villa contest the Carabao Cup tie, while Emery has signalled his belief that the defender will remain with the club for the long term and could feature in European competition in January.
