Haryana to award cash prizes to Glasgow Commonwealth Games athletes at August 7 felicitation

Haryana has announced a felicitation ceremony on August 7 in Panchkula to present cash rewards to athletes who represented India at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the state government said. The event will recognise performers from the contingent with cash prizes and certificates.

The state highlighted its contribution to India's campaign in Glasgow, noting that seven of India's 13 gold medals were won by athletes from Haryana. Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sachin Siwach, Sakshi Choudhary, Priya Changhas, Sharmila Dhankar and Ankush Panghal were the seven gold medallists, with six of those golds coming from boxing; Neeraj Chopra secured a silver in javelin. Sports Minister Gaurav Gautam said the state will spend Rs 13.47 crore on rewards for its Commonwealth Games contingent under Haryana's Sports Policy.

Under the announced rewards, each of the seven gold medallists will receive Rs 1.5 crore, while the state's two silver medallists are to be awarded Rs 75 lakh each and the bronze medallist Rs 50 lakh.

The government will also acknowledge 13 athletes who competed in Glasgow without winning medals, with each of them set to receive Rs 7.5 lakh as an incentive.

The felicitation will be held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Sector 3, Panchkula, with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini scheduled to attend as the chief guest; athletes will be presented with cash prizes and certificates recognising their performances.

Gautam said the results once again underlined Haryana's importance to India's sporting success and stressed that the government would continue working towards providing athletes with better infrastructure, facilities, and training opportunities; he also hailed India's fourth-place finish in the Glasgow Games standings, calling it a source of pride and highlighting Haryana's contribution to the campaign.

The state-managed ceremony on August 7 at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3, Panchkula will formally distribute the announced cash awards and certificates, with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini attending as the chief guest.
