Piero Hincapie and Martin Zubimendi were injured in a post-match training session at the Emirates Stadium following Arsenal's 2-1 Premier League victory over Leeds on Saturday, and manager Mikel Arteta described the situation as "far from ideal".

The session had been arranged for players who did not feature or did not play the full 90 minutes against Leeds. Hincapie, 24, came on after 82 minutes in the match while Zubimendi, 27, was an unused substitute, and Arteta confirmed both were hurt during that training period.

Arteta outlined the purpose of the session and the next steps in a news conference, saying: "We had a training session planned after the match for everyone that didn't get enough minutes, and in two unfortunate actions we lost two players," and added: "They'll have further scans to see where they are and we'll have that time frame for how long they are going to be out for."

When asked what could have been done to prevent the injuries, Arteta responded with a series of remarks that included: "Never train and they don't get injured. The consequence of that is when you ask them to play they have no rhythm and no impact in the game," the Spaniard added. "It's never happened in seven years I've been here. It could happen in the training session the next day. "It's happened now and hopefully it doesn't happen again, but what can you do? "If I had a crystal ball I would just say 'guys, get in the jacuzzi and I will see you tomorrow'."

Arteta regularly organises a small-sided game for players who have not played a full match, and he said that is how Hincapie and Zubimendi picked up their injuries as part of his efforts to get "everybody in the best rhythm." He also said Hincapie's ankle injury appeared more serious than Zubimendi's.

Hincapie has made three Premier League appearances off the bench this season and started Arsenal's Champions League win over Napoli last month, while Zubimendi has made five Premier League appearances from the bench. Substitute goalkeeper Illan Meslier was seen carrying Hincapie off the pitch on his back despite staff being present, an action Arteta described as "that's something else, not to discuss here".

Arteta made his remarks ahead of Tuesday's Champions League match against Lille and said scans will determine the extent of both players' injuries and provide a timeframe for how long they will be sidelined.
