Honest Ahanor: Chelsea agree deal for 18-year-old defender from Atalanta

Chelsea have agreed to acquire Italian international Honest Ahanor from Serie A club Atalanta, with the defender due to officially join the club in 2027. The 18-year-old operates as both a centre-back and a left-back.
Ahanor progressed through Genoa's youth system and was widely regarded there as the academy's brightest talent since Pietro Pellegri. He made six professional Serie A appearances at the age of 16 before moving on from Genoa.
Atalanta signed him in July 2025 for €16 million with add-ons, and he established himself in Bergamo with 35 appearances in all competitions, including nine in the UEFA Champions League. His performances for Atalanta last season saw him regarded as a rising talent in Italian football, which the club has moved to secure.
Despite early eligibility issues tied to his Nigerian heritage, Ahanor made his formal senior debut for Italy in June 2026. He collected his first two international caps in friendly victories against Luxembourg and Greece.
Ahanor is left-footed and is described as a contemporary centre-back with strong ball-carrying ability, tactical adaptability and a high defensive duel success rate. He is comfortable as a left centre-back, an orthodox left-back or as a wing-back, and stands roughly 1.84 meters (6 feet) tall with a slim, athletic build that relies on quickness and lengthy strides to change direction and cover ground.
He has just signed a new contract with Premier League team Chelsea FC and will spend the current season on loan at Crystal Palace.
