Honest Ahanor will join Chelsea next season but will spend the remainder of this campaign on loan at Crystal Palace, the clubs announced on 1 September 2026.
Atalanta rejected Brighton's bid of £29m (34m euros) earlier this summer before Chelsea agreed a deal worth up to £40m for the 18-year-old Italy international. The defender will not move straight to Stamford Bridge and the transfer structure means he will be on loan in the Premier League until he officially becomes a Chelsea player next summer.
Ahanor is predominantly a left-back who moved to Atalanta from Genoa on a three-year contract last summer for a reported fee of 16m euros, plus 4m euros in add-ons. He made 28 appearances in Serie A last season and established himself as a regular starter. He also made his Champions League debut in a 2-1 win against Club Brugge last September.
He received his first Italy call-up in May for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece. "I'm very happy to be here and to be a part of this great family," Ahanor told Crystal Palace official website after joining the Eagles. "To be at one of the best clubs for young players in the Premier League is something which makes me grateful and excited."
Chelsea first registered an interest in Ahanor when they signed right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta in July. Separately, Chelsea striker Marc Guiu has moved to RB Leipzig in a deal worth £14.6m, including add-ons; the 20-year-old joined the Blues from Barcelona in July 2024 and made 29 first-team appearances for Chelsea, scoring eight times.
Ahanor was announced by two Premier League clubs and appeared in two separate photoshoots wearing different club badges in a single day. The move comes after Chelsea signed centre-back Maxence Lacroix from their London rivals for £52m last month and loaned Axel Disasi directly to Palace for a £3m fee.
Under Premier League rules, clubs may loan only one player to another club in the same division. The structure agreed in Ahanor's case — under which a player is purchased in 2027 but temporarily loaned by selling club Atalanta to Chelsea's preferred destination — has been described in the article as a workaround. Chelsea have previously been accused of exploiting regulatory loopholes, including selling two hotels adjacent to Stamford Bridge and their women's team to companies within their ownership structure to comply with financial rules; they also handed out unusually long contracts after the club's American owners took over in 2022, enabling transfer fees to be spread over a greater number of seasons, and the relevant regulations were subsequently amended.
Ahanor will play for Crystal Palace during the 2026-27 season and will officially become a Chelsea player next summer.
