Huddersfield upset Leigh with five-try win

Huddersfield Giants upset Leigh Leopards in a Super League match on 28 August 2026, scoring five tries in a surprise victory. Cole Geyer crossed twice while George Flanagan kicked five goals for the Giants.

Leigh opened the scoring through Owen Trout but Huddersfield led 14-6 at half-time after Harry Rushton barged over, a Flanagan penalty and a Taane Milne try. Niall Evalds extended Huddersfield's advantage after the break and Geyer's second score with six minutes remaining sealed the win; Robbie Mulhern had reduced the deficit for Leigh with 11 minutes to play. The match lists Huddersfield tries as Rushton, Milne, Evalds and Geyer 2 with Flanagan 5 goals, and Leigh tries as Trout, Hanley, Mulhern with Cook 3 goals.

The visitors scored first after nine minutes when Trout finished an up-and-under to claim the opening try. Huddersfield responded by scoring 14 points in 10 minutes: Rushton barged over the line, Flanagan kicked a penalty from in front of the posts, and Tui Lolohea's high kick was spilled by Innes Senior, allowing Milne to gather and run in.

At the start of the second half Zac Woolford broke from dummy half and found Evalds for Huddersfield's third try. Leigh then released Josh Charnley down the right and sent Umyla Hanley over on his 100th Super League appearance. Later Huddersfield forced a goal-line drop-out that was taken short; the Giants claimed the restart, drove toward the line and Woolford grubbered in-goal for Geyer's first score.

Leigh reclaimed the restart and immediately sent Robbie Mulhern over from the next play to stay in contention, but a Leigh knock-on soon after handed Huddersfield field position and Geyer found a gap to slide in for his second try to seal the result. Leigh head coach Adrian Lam told BBC Radio Manchester: "It was hard to watch and nothing like we've been over the past four months. "I thought Huddersfield were great, they were very physical and on point and we knew we were going to come here and have a tough game. "We knew we needed to be sharp with high completions and minimum errors and we just came out of that really badly and it's the worst we've played over the last three-four months."

Huddersfield named Evalds; Milne, Jagger, Halsall, Zenon; Lolohea, Clune; Powell, Woolford, King, Hewitt, Cozza, Rushton, with interchanges Rogers, Flanagan, Billington and Geyer. Leigh's line-up was O'Brien; Senior, Badrock, Hanley, Charnley; Cook, Lam; Ofahengaue, Horne, Mulhern, Hughes, Trout, Liu, with interchanges Brogan, Ashworth, Alick-Wiencke and Ipape.

The victory was Huddersfield's seventh of the season, five of those coming in their past six matches, and moved them up to 12th in the table. Leigh had arrived having won eight of their past nine games and remain fifth with two regular-season matches remaining after St Helens, in seventh, lost at home to Leeds.

Huddersfield sit above York in the standings and head to Toulouse next.
