Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0 at MKM Stadium in Premier League opener

Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by newly-promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium in their opening Premier League match on August 22, 2026, Michael Carrick's side suffering a disappointing start to the season. Hull took control early and led at half-time after goals in the 17th and 38th minutes.
United had entered the new season with renewed optimism after ending the previous campaign strongly under Carrick, but Hull produced a high-energy, intense display that exposed defensive frailties. The hosts opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Semi Ajayi reacted quickest to a defensive lapse to finish from close range. The visitors were unable to recover before the break.
Hull doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Nobel Mendy rose highest inside the box to send a powerful header beyond goalkeeper Senne Lammens. United struggled to match Hull’s physicality and tempo, particularly during home attacks. Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire and an ageing Luke Shaw failed to cope with the intensity coming from Hull’s forward line.
Carrick introduced Marcus Rashford at half-time; the forward was making his first competitive appearance for the club in 618 days. Rashford’s arrival did not alter the course of the match, as United created very little after the interval.
Bryan Mbeumo came closest to pulling a goal back, but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis stood firm to deny his effort. Hull remained composed and largely untroubled in the second half, securing a convincing victory that left Carrick with plenty to address after a hugely disappointing opening day.
United are reportedly close to getting a deal done for Carlos Baleba from Brighton, and the loss gives them a lot to ponder when it comes to defensive signings with the transfer window still open.
