Hyderabad completed an innings and 40 runs victory over Tripura at Gymkhana in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 opener on Tuesday, with Tanay Thyagarajann claiming the final three wickets on day three to finish with nine scalps in the match.

The match was largely decided on the opening day after Wasim Jaffer suggested a fielding reshuffle to counter Tripura’s handling of the turning red-soil surface; Rahul Radesh was moved to short-fine leg and immediately took a catch off Tanay to dismiss Hrituraj Ghosh Roy. Tripura had earlier navigated the initial period on the pitch, but Hyderabad’s adjustment produced the breakthrough that precipitated the collapse.

Tanay struck twice in quick succession following that catch, and Tripura then lost seven wickets while adding only five runs. Tripura captain Manisankar Murasingh likened the collapse to watching a house of cards fall.

On the third day Tanay completed his seven-wicket match contribution by taking the last three wickets in 6.2 overs. Sentu Sarkar fell first in that spell, with a sharp chance held by Tanmay Agarwal at first slip; two overs later Parvez Sultan was caught at silly point by K. Himateja. A dropped chance by Mohammed Siraj at point allowed Abhijith Sarkar to survive briefly, but Sandip Sarkar was out for a duck in the following over, and the result handed Siraj his first Ranji win as captain.

Preparation levels differed between the sides: Tripura started training only after arriving in the City of Pearls a week before the match, while Hyderabad arrived having prepared together for several weeks. “This is the most prepared we’ve been as a team. We’ve been preparing well individually over the years but as a team this is the best. The camp was really focused on our fitness and fielding. It made sure we got to the level where we could play the first and last game of the tournament with the same intensity,” Tanay explained.
