I.M. Vijayan and José Barreto named Goodwill Ambassadors for Kolkata friendlies
On October 1, 2026, former internationals I.M. Vijayan and José Barreto were announced as Goodwill Ambassadors for India’s FIFA Men’s international friendlies in Kolkata and will carry the official match ball onto the pitch before kickoff. The two former footballers will attend the fixture and take part in the ceremonial match-ball presentation.
The announcement comes as Brazil and Uruguay arrive in Kolkata for back-to-back international fixtures, an arrival organisers say has added vibrancy to the city. The fixtures coincide with the approach of the festive season in Bengal and have turned the city into a celebration that brings together fans, communities and generations. Local organisers described the atmosphere around the matches as reflecting football’s place in the cultural fabric of Bengal.
The match-ball presentation will give Vijayan and Barreto a ceremonial role that organisers framed as an opportunity to represent the spirit of the game beyond the 90 minutes on the field. Their involvement was presented as reflecting values of unity, sportsmanship, camaraderie and respect tied to the occasion.
I.M. Vijayan was described in the announcement as one of the most celebrated names in Indian football. The release referred to José Barreto as the Brazilian legend who holds a special place in the hearts of Indian football fans. The statement said both former players have left a lasting mark on the sport through their careers and their contributions to football’s growth in India.
The FIFA Men’s International friendly series will feature style bazar Powered by Amul as the principal partner. The organisers said the series will build upon the football association with Spain and Argentina during the recent FIFA World Cup 2026. Bharat Taxi will act as the official mobility partner, and the two brands believe in the growth of football in India.
