Iga Swiatek withdrew from the Ningbo Open on October 20, 2026, citing a persistent left thigh injury and ending her chances of direct qualification for the 2026 WTA Finals. The decision removes her immediate route to the season-ending tournament in Indian Wells and means she could only reach the event as an alternate if a qualified player withdraws.

The six-time Grand Slam champion had required a strong run in China to secure a place at the WTA Finals; her withdrawal makes this the first time she will miss qualifying since 2019. Although Swiatek did qualify in 2020, that edition was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the final qualifying spot currently occupied by Karolina Muchova, the Ningbo Open represented her last realistic opportunity to force direct entry.

Swiatek issued a statement announcing the withdrawal, saying: "After careful consideration, I’ve decided to withdraw from the tournament. I’ve been experiencing an ongoing problem with my left thigh over the past weeks and I feel that giving myself the time to rest and recover is the right decision". Her physical problems were visible during last week’s Wuhan Open campaign.

At Wuhan she reached the semi-finals where she faced compatriot and childhood friend Maja Chwalinska, but the left thigh issue impaired her movement. Swiatek held a 5-3 lead in the opening set and had two set points before Chwalinska mounted a comeback.

Swiatek received medical treatment during the match and continued with her thigh bandaged, ultimately losing 5-7, 1-6. She completed the match despite advice from her physiotherapist to retire.

She required at least a quarter-final showing in Ningbo to remain in contention for the final qualifying place, a threshold her withdrawal removed. Swiatek, who won the WTA Finals in 2023, has struggled for consistency this season and did not progress beyond the quarter-finals at any Grand Slam this year.

With direct qualification now impossible, Swiatek must focus on recovery and preparing for the next season. Whether she features as an alternate at the WTA Finals remains to be seen.
