India 1-3 Uruguay at Eden Gardens in 1982 Nehru Cup

India last met Uruguay on 25th February 1982 at Eden Gardens in Calcutta during the Nehru Cup, losing 3-1 in front of a jam-packed crowd.
The Indian team is preparing for the final fixture of the September-October international break after a 1-1 draw against Panama in Bengaluru and a 4-0 defeat to Brazil on Saturday; Khalid Jamil’s side conceded goals to individual errors in the Brazil match but created chances and say the performance has boosted morale and given renewed belief to supporters.
The 1982 Nehru Cup in Calcutta invited Uruguay, China, South Korea, Italy’s U-21 team and Yugoslavia’s B team, with all matches held at Eden Gardens; Uruguay went on to win the tournament by beating China 2-0 in the final.
In the India versus Uruguay fixture on 25th February 1982, Atletico Madrid’s Jorge da Silva scored in the 8th and 23rd minutes, Manas Bhattacharya pulled one back for India in the 35th minute to make it 2-1 at halftime, and Mario Saralegui struck in the 70th minute to complete a 3-1 victory for Uruguay.
India lost to Uruguay and Italy’s U-21 team in that Nehru Cup, secured draws against South Korea and China, and defeated Yugoslavia’s B-team 2-1 to finish the tournament in fifth place.
The Blue Tigers also faced Uruguay’s B-team at the 2001 Sahara Cup, a 15-team event; drawn in Group II with Iceland and Indonesia, the group was reduced to three teams after Indonesia withdrew days before the tournament, and India lost 3-0 to Uruguay B at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, then lost 3-0 to Iceland to finish bottom of Group II, while Uruguay B topped the group, beat Iceland and progressed to the knock-outs where they lost to Bosnia on a golden goal in the Quarter-Finals.
India will play Uruguay on 6th October, 2026 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan VYBK in Kolkata. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 PM IST.
