India aims for a cleaner performance against Malaysia in Asian Champions Trophy clash

India and Malaysia will meet in Jalandhar on Sunday in the Asian Champions Trophy, with India already assured of a place in the semifinals after three wins in as many games. The unbeaten sides face a potential battle for the top spot on the tournament points table.
India arrived at the fixture after a closer-than-expected win over Japan, a match in which Abhishek struck twice and Vishnukant also scored. A single penalty corner late in the fourth quarter, described in reports as a stroke of luck, broke the deadlock for the hosts, and the squad had a scheduled Saturday break to refresh and reassess performance ahead of the Malaysia game.
Head coach Craig Fulton acknowledged the challenge posed by tighter opponents, saying: “Sometimes when you play a lot of easy games, it just kind of changes perspective and you think you’re just going to walk in and beat everyone by six-seven goals. And it (the challenge) is good. You don’t always get what you want and you have to find a way,” Fulton admitted. The team will aim to reduce errors after that outing, with calls for Sanjay and Jarmanpreet to improve their defensive discipline and for the midfield to create more openings.
Reflecting on the Japan match, Abhishek said: “Yes, it was a wake-up call. Japan played well, but if we play to our plan, I am sure we can do better against Malaysia,” he said.
India’s recent record versus Malaysia has been favourable over the past decade, although the teams have provided tight encounters; India’s last defeat to Malaysia occurred in the 2018 Asian Games semifinals, decided in a shootout. The sides most recently met in the Asian Games final, a 5-1 victory for India that secured Olympic qualification for the team.
Malaysia, nicknamed the Speedy Tigers in the coverage, arrive with different objectives and a desire to challenge the region’s leading sides. “We don’t just look to finish in top two but we want to close the gap with the big teams,” Malaysia head coach Brendon Carolan said.
The Sunday meeting in Jalandhar will not only decide local bragging rights but could determine who tops the Asian Champions Trophy points table heading into the semifinals, with both teams unbeaten and seeking the most advantageous position for the knockout stage.
