India among seven NOCs confirmed as interested hosts for 2036 Olympics

On November 2, 2026, the International Olympic Committee confirmed that India was one of seven National Olympic Committees that have expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games.
The seven interested parties named by the IOC are Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, South Africa and Turkey, a list finalised after the deadline for other NOCs to enter discussions passed with no additional countries coming forward. The IOC had initially published the names on October 6 and the decision to open the process was approved by the IOC Session in June, which subsequently set the deadline for further entries. India has previously hosted major international events, including the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, and the country’s inclusion is described in the report as an important step toward bringing the Olympics to India for the first time.
IOC Member Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, Chair of the Future Host Commission for the Games of the Olympiad, commented on the process and the interest shown: "This will be the first edition of the Olympic Games to be elected under the Fit for the Future changes. The strong interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics shows that countries across the world recognise the enduring social and economic value the Games can have for local communities. We will continue to work closely with all seven Interested Parties to support them in developing their projects," she said.
For India, the coming months will be used to develop a detailed hosting case; the report says the process will require a comprehensive proposal covering infrastructure, sporting facilities, transport, accommodation and long-term sustainability. The confirmation of interest does not itself grant hosting rights and the country must set out those elements to the IOC as part of the evaluation phase. The document notes that staging the Olympics would represent a significant milestone for Indian sport.
The IOC described the current list of seven as the start of a structured selection pathway and emphasised that the confirmation is only the beginning of a lengthy evaluation. The report states the final decision on the 2036 host remains some distance away and that further review and assessments will follow before any selection is made.
The next procedural steps are defined in the IOC timeline: the seven Interested Parties are due to make virtual presentations to the Future Host Commission in November 2026, these will be followed by IOC feasibility assessments by March 2027, and the IOC Executive Board will open the 2036 Strategic Dialogue in March 2027.
