India at 37 medals after seven on Sunday; Day 9 opens with surfing and archery
India won seven medals on Sunday at the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, taking its overall total to 37 as the contingent prepared for Day 9 of competition. None of those seven were gold, leaving India with four gold medals after eight days of action.
India’s 37 medals comprise 4 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze, and only one of the four golds has come in a non-cricket, non-kabaddi sport. As the team moves into Day 9, the focus is on adding to the medal haul and seeking elusive gold medals across multiple disciplines.
Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker returns to the firing line for the women’s 25m pistol qualification and the team final alongside Esha Singh and Rahi Sarnobat. Bhaker will aim to move past the disappointment she faced in the 10m air pistol event. The women’s 25m pistol is one of India’s shooting events scheduled for Day 9.
In athletics, Murali Sreeshankar will compete in the men’s long jump final after taking silver at Hangzhou 2022, and he will aim to improve on that result in Aichi-Nagoya. David Solomon, a late addition to India’s contingent, is also listed for the same long jump final.
Defending champion Avinash Sable is set to attempt to retain his title in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. Parul Chaudhary will run in the women’s 5000m; she took bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase here, a drop from the silver she won in 2022, and will look to defend her gold in the 5000m alongside Seema.
Two-time reigning champion Neeraj Chopra has withdrawn through injury, so Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh will represent India in the men’s javelin throw final. Yash Vir aims to replicate his bronze-winning performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, while Rohit Yadav is noted as India’s all-time second-best thrower.
