India at the Asian Games: participation, medals and P. T. Usha

India has taken part in every edition of the Asian Games since the inaugural tournament in New Delhi in 1951. It is one of seven nations to have appeared in all 19 editions of the Games.

The Indian Olympic Association was one of the six founding members of the Asian Games Federation in 1949, a body later superseded by the Olympic Council of Asia, which now organises the Asian Games. India is counted among the competition’s most successful teams. Indian athletes have secured at least one gold medal at every edition and finished inside the top 10 in all but one edition (the 1982 New Delhi Games).

The country currently ranks fifth in the overall medal tally with 779 medals. The total comprises 183 golds, 239 silvers and 357 bronzes.

India has hosted the Asian Games twice, in 1951 and 1982, with both editions staged in New Delhi.

P. T. Usha is the most decorated Indian athlete in Asian Games history. The Kerala sprinter competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 400m hurdles and won 11 medals at the tournament, including four golds and seven silvers.
