India beat Malaysia 5-1 in Japan to retain Asian Games men's hockey gold

India's men's hockey team defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the Asian Games 2026 final in Japan on October 3, 2026, retaining the continental title with a comprehensive victory.
The win is the first successful defence of the Asian Games hockey gold by India and takes their total to five men's titles, joining the previous wins in 1966, 1998, 2014 and 2023. Harmanpreet Singh became the first Indian captain to guide the team to two Asian Games gold medals, while Manpreet Singh won his third Asian Games gold, the only Indian player to reach that mark. India also claimed both the men's and women's hockey gold medals at the same edition for the first time, and the 5-1 scoreline equalled their biggest margin in an Asian Games final, matching the 5-1 win over Japan in Hangzhou three years ago.
Harmanpreet Singh scored twice in the final, while Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh (from a penalty stroke) and Shilanand Lakra also found the net for India; Shello Silverius scored Malaysia's lone goal. The goals came in the 11th (Harmanpreet), 14th (Shello), 23rd (Jugraj), 42nd (Hardik), 54th (Shilanand) and 57th (Harmanpreet) minutes, producing the 5-1 final score.
The opening quarter featured tentative play from both sides and heavy reliance on aerial balls, with India threatening in the fifth minute when Harmanpreet intercepted and set up Vivek Sagar Prasad, whose reverse-stick attempt sailed over the crossbar. A minute later Malaysia's two deep defenders denied Dilpreet Singh a close-range chance. India broke the deadlock in the 11th minute after Harmanpreet found Hardik Singh on the right; Hardik set up Abhishek, leading to India's first of 14 penalty corners and, after a re-take, Harmanpreet converted with a low drag-flick.
Malaysia responded immediately when Shello Silverius controlled a scoop into the circle and volleyed past Suraj Karkera in the 14th minute to level the contest. Early in the second quarter a turnover earned Malaysia a penalty corner and led to a goalkeeper change, with Mohith HS replacing Karkera and making a key close-range block. Malaysia then won another corner via video referral but Faizal Saari's flick struck Manpreet Singh's foot; India survived the re-take and Jugraj Singh restored a 2-1 lead in the 23rd minute with a powerful drag-flick while Harmanpreet was off the pitch.
After the break India pressed through the right flank, with Hardik Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh creating chances that did not immediately pay off. In the 42nd minute Sanjay created a penalty corner and a variation involving Harmanpreet and Mandeep Singh resulted in a deflection that hit a Malaysian defender on the goal line; the awarded penalty stroke stood after Malaysia's video referral failed, and Hardik converted to make it 3-1.
India kept the pressure in the final quarter, with Rajinder Singh coming close in the 50th minute and a prolonged penalty-corner sequence unfolding two minutes later. A decisive move in the 54th minute saw Shilanand Lakra combine with Abhishek and Sukhjeet Singh before finishing from close range to extend the lead to 4-1, and Harmanpreet added his second from a penalty corner in the 57th minute to seal the 5-1 result.
The victory secured India's place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with the Asian Games gold confirming the team's Olympic qualification.
