India were defeated 0-4 by five-time World Cup winners Brazil in a friendly football match at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on October 3, 2026, a fixture that left India coach Khalid Jamil reflecting on the value of facing elite opposition.

Jamil said the encounter provided perspective for his squad and stressed the importance of regular exposure to top-class teams, arguing such games expose players to higher levels of speed, decision-making, concentration and pressure that training cannot easily replicate. He noted the result underlined a learning curve, saying India were competitive for periods but that small lapses were immediately punished against a team of Brazil’s quality.

“If you play with a good team, you make one mistake, and they will finish. For that, your concentration should be good, and you have to be alert all through the action,” Jamil said on Saturday, and he also acknowledged the psychological challenge before kick-off: “Before the match, there was pressure on the players. Definitely, 100%, because you are going to play against Brazil.”

Jamil delivered a dry assessment when asked to rate the performance: “We have got zero points.” He praised midfielders Lalengmawia Apuia and Anirudh Thapa and highlighted attackers Ryan Williams, Sahal Abdul Samad and Manvir Singh, adding, “Overall, it was very good,” while conceding, “So defensively, we should be a little stronger.”

Brazil’s coach Carlo Ancelotti said India had been well organised and difficult to break down early on, observing: “India played their part well. They tried to play their game; they defended... were organised, and tried to play counter-attack. I think that they played a good game. We had difficulty opening the score, but the moment we opened the score with Estevao, we had more opportunity to control the game.”

Jamil framed the match as part of a developmental approach, arguing consistent matches against high-quality opposition can build players’ self-belief and urging more such fixtures: “They must have that belief. We need to play more matches like this,”.
