India will face Malaysia in the men’s field hockey gold-medal match at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium on October 3, with the defending champions one victory away from winning successive Asian Games titles. A win would also secure India a place at the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

India reached the final after a dramatic 4-3 semi-final win over Pakistan in which they had led 3-0 before Pakistan fought back to level at 3-3 and India scored the decisive goal in the last minute of regulation. Malaysia advanced by holding off South Korea 2-1 in their semi-final, having topped Pool B with five consecutive wins and remaining unbeaten through the tournament. Malaysia are aiming for their first Asian Games gold, while India have never won successive Asian Games gold medals.

The close nature of India’s semi-final has prompted internal focus on defensive improvements; the report says India will look to tighten up defensively and eliminate the small lapses that allowed Pakistan to return to the contest. With only a day between the semi-final and the gold-medal match, recovery, composure and attention to detail are identified as important for the short turnaround.

India’s Chief Coach Craig Fulton previewed the final with two direct comments: “Malaysia have done well, had a good tournament so far, so it’s going to be a nice match-up,” said Fulton. “We haven’t played Malaysia for quite some time; I think the last time was at the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai. Two nice attacking teams, lots of skill, lots of flair, lots of speed.” Fulton added: “We want to focus on just our own game plan, put our proactive mindset into the game, and leave it all out there on the pitch.”

Captain Harmanpreet Singh has been central to India’s scoring, with 10 goals from penalty corners and sits second in the tournament scoring charts behind Pakistan’s Sufiyan Khan, while strikers Abhishek and Dilpreet Singh have nine goals each. Malaysia’s primary attacking threats are Faizal Saari and Abu Kamal Azrai, who have both scored nine goals in the competition.

The final also carries individual milestones: a victory would make Harmanpreet the first Indian captain to lead the men’s team to two Asian Games gold medals. Manpreet Singh, described in the report as the most capped Indian hockey player, can become the only Indian with three Asian Games gold medals, having been part of the winning teams in 2014 and 2023.

The men’s hockey final is scheduled for October 3 at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium, with a 7 pm local start time (3:30 pm IST).
