India collects 106 medals to finish fourth at 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou
India completed its 19th Asian Games appearance in Hangzhou at the 2022 Asian Games with its best-ever haul, winning 106 medals — 28 gold, 38 silver and 40 bronze — to finish fourth on the points table.
The medals came from 22 different sports rather than a narrow set of disciplines, contrasting with India’s typical Commonwealth Games approach; archery, athletics and shooting were among the most productive contributors. India had sent a 661-member contingent to compete in 35 different disciplines at the 2022 Asian Games.
Athletics produced the highest single-sport medal total with 29 medals (six golds, 14 silvers and nine bronzes). Neeraj Chopra successfully defended his javelin title with Kishore Jena earning silver, while Tejaswin Shankar and Avinash Sable added podium finishes in field and endurance events; Parul Chaudhary won gold in the 5,000m and combined with a steeplechase medal, Annu Rani took gold in the women’s javelin, and the mixed 4x400m relay collected silver after Sri Lanka’s disqualification.
Archery’s Compound section delivered five gold medals as India swept the category, with Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Deotale each winning three golds across individual, mixed team and same-gender team events. Abhishek Verma contributed a silver and 17-year-old Aditi Swami won a bronze, while India also added two recurve medals — a men’s team silver and a women’s team bronze.
Racket sports yielded landmark results: badminton provided India’s first-ever Asian Games gold in the sport when Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat South Korea in the men’s doubles final; HS Prannoy took bronze in men’s singles and the men’s team won silver. Squash accounted for two golds — the men’s team led by Saurav Ghosal beat Pakistan 2-1 and Dipika Pallikal with Harinder Pal Sandhu won mixed doubles — with Ghosal also securing an individual silver and the women’s team a bronze. Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee earned India’s maiden women’s doubles medal in table tennis (bronze), and Rohan Bopanna with Rutuja Bhosale rallied from a set down to win mixed doubles tennis gold while Saketh Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan took silver in men’s doubles.
Cricket returned to the Asian Games after a hiatus and both Indian teams won gold: the women’s side, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, went unbeaten to beat Sri Lanka in the final, and the men’s team — playing a second-string squad — were awarded gold based on higher seeding after rain washed out their final against Afghanistan. Equestrian yielded team dressage gold for Anush Agarwalla, Divyakirti Singh, Hriday Chheda and Sudipti Hajela, and Agarwalla added an individual dressage bronze. In hockey, Harmanpreet Singh’s men defeated defending champions Japan 5-1 in the final to claim a fourth Asian Games title, while the women lost to China in the semi-finals but beat Japan to take bronze. Both men’s and women’s kabaddi teams reclaimed golds, the women edging Chinese Taipei and the men overcoming Iran.
Shooting produced India’s best-ever Asian Games return with 22 medals, including seven golds, nine silvers and six bronzes; Divyansh Panwar, Rudrankksh Patil and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar won the men’s 10m air rifle team gold to open the account. Sift Kaur Samra set a world record en route to individual gold in the 50m rifle three positions, 17-year-old Palak Gulia won 10m air pistol gold with a record-breaking Asian Games score, and Aishwary Tomar and Esha Singh each collected four medals. Weightlifting was a weaker area: Mirabai Chanu, not fully fit, finished fourth in the women’s 49kg and Bindyarani Devi placed fifth in the 55kg, extending India’s Asian Games medal drought in the sport back to the 1998 Bangkok edition. Boxing returned more modestly than at the Commonwealth Games, with Lovlina Borgohain taking silver and Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar and Narender Berwal winning bronze, while wrestling produced no golds but Deepak Punia secured silver and Sunil Kumar (Greco-Roman), Antim Panghal, Sonam Malik, Kiran and Aman Sehrawat added bronze medals.
