India declare 503/9 after Jurel 115; Sri Lanka 8/2 and trail by 495 in Colombo
Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 115 off 177 as India declared their first innings on 503/9 in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Day 2, and Sri Lanka were 8/2 at stumps, trailing by 495, with the third day scheduled for Tuesday, 25th August.
Jurel’s century was his second in Test cricket and his first in Sri Lankan conditions; he reached three figures by driving Asitha Fernando over the bowler’s head and celebrated by displaying his "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" tattoo. Devdutt Padikkal contributed 117 and Rishabh Pant scored 63 as India built a large total before declaring, with Manav Suthar and Mohammed Siraj offering support in the lower order.
During India’s innings Jurel initially anchored the effort before accelerating late, and he put together a 39-run stand with Manav Suthar after Pant was dismissed at the start of the post-lunch session. The pitch began to offer more to spin as the day progressed but India’s batters remained largely composed, allowing the visitors to cross the 500 mark and call Sri Lanka to bat at a testing stage of the day.
Sri Lanka’s reply began with Prasidh Krishna removing Lahiru Udara, caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal at third slip, leaving the hosts 1/1 and trailing by 502 at that moment. Kamil Mishara got off the mark with 5 before Prabath Jayasuriya, sent in as nightwatchman, was later trapped lbw by Manav Suthar; Jayasuriya’s review and UltraEdge showed a flick onto the boot and Ball Tracking returned umpire’s call.
The closing session was disrupted repeatedly by rain and deteriorating light: covers were brought on and off as the conditions changed, umpires inspected the outfield and Ahsan Raza placed the light meter on the stumps. Frustration from the Sri Lankan side was visible after Jayasuriya’s dismissal, and play was ultimately halted with artificial lights taking over and stumps called because of bad light.
Bowling details from the late stages included Prasidh Krishna operating at 135.7 kph in one over and Mohammed Siraj delivering at 126.7 kph in an earlier over; Manav Suthar produced a sequence that included deliveries recorded at 82.8 kph and 98.1 kph during his spell. Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando repeatedly led their bowling effort while Nuwantha and Jayasuriya had earlier chipped in with wickets when India were batting.
India maintain a commanding position with Sri Lanka set a large deficit to erase, and the match is due to resume on Tuesday, 25th August with a likelihood of an early start — the first ball is expected at 4.15 am GMT (9.45 am IST) to make up for overs lost.
