India eliminated by North Korea 3-0 in women’s table tennis quarter-finals at Asian Games 2026

India’s women’s table tennis team were beaten 3-0 by North Korea in the quarter-finals of the Asian Games 2026 at the Sky Hall Toyota on 22 September 2026, ending their chances of a team medal.

India had reached the last eight after a surprise win over 2022 bronze medallist Thailand and entered the tie one match short of what the report described as a historic first women’s team medal; Sreeja Akula, Yashaswini Ghorpade and Diya Chitale each lost their singles matches as North Korea closed out a straight-games victory.

Sreeja Akula opened the contest but was defeated in straight games by Kim Kum Yong, the defending Asian Games singles champion, 7-11, 6-11, 5-11.

Yashaswini Ghorpade, described in the report as 21 years old, lost the second singles tie 4-11, 3-11, 6-11 to Pyon Song Gyong and was unable to maintain an unbeaten run at the tournament.

Diya Chitale, identified as 23 years old and needing a win to keep India in the contest, fell to Cha Su Yong 9-11, 7-11, 8-11 in the final singles match.

Earlier on Tuesday India’s men’s team were also eliminated, losing 3-0 to South Korea in the round of 16; Harmeet Desai went down 3-1 to Jang Woojin, Manush Shah lost 3-2 to Oh Junsung, and Manav Thakkar was defeated in straight games by An Jae-hyun.

The report noted the singles and doubles competitions had yet to begin: Thakkar, Akula and Ghorpade received byes into the singles round of 32, Manush Shah was scheduled to face Malaysia’s Qi Shen Wong, the men’s and women’s doubles teams had byes into the round of 32, the mixed doubles pair of Harmeet Desai and Ghorpade had a bye into the round of 32, and Payas Jain and Chitale had a bye into the round of 16.

With both India’s men’s and women’s teams out of the team events, the country’s overall medal count at the Games stood at seven — 1 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze — while individual singles and doubles campaigns for Indian players remained to be contested.
