India finish fourth with 106 medals at Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou

India finished fourth in the medal table at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China, which were held from September 23 to October 8, 2023, claiming 106 medals in total: 28 golds, 38 silvers and 40 bronzes.

A contingent of 661 Indian athletes—333 men and 328 women—competed in medal events across 35 sports at the Games, with India one of 45 nations taking part; the 106-medal haul was the country’s best-ever at the Asian Games and the first time India exceeded 100 medals. The finish was the nation’s third-highest placing in the tournament’s history, behind the 1951 New Delhi Games (second) and the 1962 Jakarta Games (third).

In badminton, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy secured India’s first-ever gold in the sport at the Asian Games, and the Indian shuttlers produced their best medal return in badminton with three medals overall.

Shooting was a major source of medals for India, with shooters delivering seven golds, nine silvers and six bronzes; Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar individually contributed two golds, one silver and one bronze to that total.

Indian archers also fared strongly, with Jyothi Surekha and Ojas Deotale each winning three gold medals in compound events; India’s archery contingent finished with a combined five golds, two silvers and two bronzes.

Athletics added multiple podium finishes, producing six golds, 14 silvers and nine bronzes for the Indian team.

Hosts China topped the final standings with 383 medals, including 201 golds, 111 silvers and 71 bronzes; Japan finished second with 188 medals, including 52 golds, 67 silvers and 69 bronzes; South Korea placed third with 42 golds, 59 silvers and 89 bronzes for a total of 190 medals.

India’s fourth-place finish at the Asian Games 2022 came on the back of the country’s highest-ever overall medal total of 106 — 28 golds, 38 silvers and 40 bronzes — behind China, Japan and South Korea.
