India ended its fourth appearance at the Asian Para Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China, with a total of 108 medals — 27 gold, 32 silver and 49 bronze — recording the country’s best-ever haul at the tournament. The Hangzhou edition had been postponed by a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 108-medal total marked the first time India surpassed the 100-medal mark at the Asian Para Games, comfortably overtaking its previous best of 72 medals from the 2018 Jakarta Games. India had initially been listed fifth on the medal table with 111 medals (29 gold, 31 silver, 51 bronze) before Neeraj Yadav was stripped of his gold medals for doping violations and subsequent reallocations left India sixth with 108 medals.

Archery yielded seven medals for India: two gold, three silver and two bronze. Sixteen-year-old armless archer Sheetal Devi won three medals, taking gold in the women’s individual compound, pairing with Rakesh Kumar for gold in the mixed team compound, and claiming silver in women’s compound doubles alongside Sarita.

Athletics produced 55 of India’s medals, with an 18-17-20 split of gold, silver and bronze. Sumit Antil set a world record with a 73.29 m throw in the men’s javelin F64, while Sundar Singh Gurjar established a world record of 68.60 m in the javelin F46. Ankur Dhama became the first Indian to win two golds at a single Asian Para Games edition by capturing the men’s T11 1500 m and 5000 m, Nishad Kumar won gold in the high jump T47, and Deepthi Jeevanji claimed gold and an Asian Games record in the women’s 400 m T20.

India’s para-chess squad contributed eight medals — two gold, one silver and five bronze — across individual and team events. Darpan Inani won individual gold in the Men’s Individual Rapid VI-B1 and was part of the men’s team that took gold in the same event, with Soundarya Kumar Pradhan earning silver and Ashvin Makwana bronze; their results were cited as factors in India’s earlier top-five standing in the meet.

Para-badminton returned 21 medals for India: four gold, four silver and 13 bronze. Pramod Bhagat won the men’s singles SL3 title and Suhas Yathiraj took gold in men’s singles SL4; Kumar Nitesh secured silver in the SL3 singles and teamed with Tarun Dhillon to win men’s doubles (SL3–SL4). In para-canoeing, Prachi Yadav led with gold in the women’s KL2 and added silver in VL2 as India finished the discipline with one gold, one silver and two bronze.

Indian shooters collected six medals — two gold, two silver and two bronze. Avani Lekhara set an Asian Para Games record en route to gold in the women’s 10 m air rifle standing SH1, Sidhartha Babu won the R6 50 m rifle prone SH1 gold, and Rudransh Khandelwal took silver in the P4 50 m pistol SH1. Athletes also reached the podium in powerlifting, judo, rowing, table tennis, swimming and taekwondo: Bhavina Patel won bronze in women’s singles table tennis Class 4, Sandeep Dangi took bronze in men’s singles Class 1, and Kapil Parmar earned silver in men’s J1 −60kg judo after advancing to the final.

India finished sixth on the final medal table, level with Thailand on total medals (108) and golds (27) but placed ahead on silver medals, 32 to Thailand’s 26.
